Spring has sprung…
May 5, 2008 by janicemaynard

Although my favorite season is fall, spring comes in at a close second. Last year, a late freeze wreaked havoc with all the flowering plants and trees in our neck of the woods. But this time around, everything has been spectacular. Tulips, lilacs, daffodils, you name it - even the dogwoods are prettier than usual.
The week before last my dh had to go down to the Smokies to do a workshop for the Wildflower Pilgrimage. This is an event that has been happening every spring for over 50 years. They have hikes, programs, music, all sorts of stuff. Charles had to do something in the morning and something at 5 PM…but in the middle of the day we managed to sneak away and walk up to Clingman’s Dome. I’ve been going there since I was a kid, and this had to be about the clearest I have ever seen the view.
We picnicked at the Chimney’s picnic area beside the creek, and then we took lots of wildflower pictures. It was such fun, and what a treat to be in the great outdoors on a warm, pleasant spring day.
The lilac photo is from my yard - the wildflower photo is taken in the Smokies. In that one picture you can see: yellow trillium (the big flower), the filldehead stage of Christmas ferns (the curly thing), wild phlox (the blue), Bishop’s cap (the tiny white), parsnip (the tiny yellow), aand white phacelia.
We saw some white trillium nearby as well.
So, with flowers as today’s theme - here’s what I want to know… if money was no object, what are the two flowers you would like to have in your house to enjoy every day?
I’m traditional when it comes to roses, and I love it when my dh brings me some. I also love orchids, and I have been looking at them at Lowe’s, wondering if I would kill one if I brought it home?!?!?
I’ll pick a name from all the posts today to win a box full of fun promo stuff and books that I brought home from the RT convention in Pittsburgh.
Good luck,
Janice Maynard
P.S. Obviously, the first and secod photos are the same… I tried to take one out, but something didn’t work… oh well…
roses would be one cause of the smell and the look of all different colors. And then pansy would be next cause they always remind me of my daddy. He always called every flower but a rose by the name of pansy. He was contrary that way did it on purpose to rile my stepmom.
I would love to have tulips and daffodils in my house everyday!
Tulips are my all time favorite and so are lilies. Both of these have such a short life span that I can’t keep them very long.
I would love to have a Bird of Paradise plant. If I had the house for it, I’ve seen where people have a center area of their home that is open and surrounded by glass for viewing, with fountains and plants, all kinds. I would love to have that! Maybe one day when I build my dream home, which would be a log home, by the way.
I would love to have lilacs. I love the smell of them. My second flower would be tulips, just because I like to look at them!
Good morning, Janice and ladies!
Me, I would like to have an orchid or ten
The only time I allowed myself to splurge on one I killed it
and I have been wanting to redeem myself.
In the meantime, though, I’m making do with violets, daffodils, hyacinths, irises, etc.
For flowers with gorgeous scents, gardenias–oh man, what a lovely lovely perfume they have!
I like al bright coloured flowers! They really make you happy, don’t they?
But I don’t have a favorite kind of flower, as long as they’re are bright red or purple or yellow or …
I love the colors of tulips and the fragrance of carnations.
I love both lilies and lilacs. I love being out in our backyard when the lilac trees are in bloom, it’s just the most fragrant time of year! Thank for the beautiful photos.
I would choose orchids and tulips. Maybe I could make my own lei.
The pictures are beautiful! I love this time of year before all the humidity hits. I like to sit outside and read while my kids are playing, I love using my grill and also how everything just looks so fresh.
As for flowers, for me I would want either lilacs because they were my grandmother’s favorite and I’m named after her or just daisies. I love daisies for their beautiful simplicity.
I love everything blooming but my head is all stuffed up!
Christy
i love gardina and jasmines they smell so good.
I like the looks of Gerber Daisies. For the aroma I like carnations or lilacs.
Spring is my favorite season here in Indiana! The rebirth of all that’s green and the sprouting of flowers!
Ooo…it is definitely pansies for me in the spring! I love the deep, deep purple ones, bright orange ones and sunny yellows! I like to mix them or even plant all of one color in my big planter barrels.
At the moment my nose is off key so my smeller is out of whack. I have allergies but I love to smell flowers anyway! I am a glutton for punishment. Ha,ha!
Happy spring!
My second favorite flower which I forgot to include in my comment is a bunch of red carnations! They are so pretty and last so long! A spray of baby’s breath with green ferns really compliments it.
I am going to have to buy me some now!
The lilacs in our yard are gorgeous right now too.
My two favorite flowers are daisies and brown-eyed Susans. I love to see a large group of them in bloom in the yard.
Fall is my favorite time of year - cooler weather, changing leaves and FOOTBALL!
This was fun! You all have reminded me of so many flowers I love…
I don’t play favorites… I enjoy wildflowers, the annuals you buy each spring and set out, and also the more exotic flowers from a florist…
I think it would be awesome to visit the rainforest and see wome really unusual blossoms!
Janice
I’ll draw a winner at noon tomorrow (Tuesday).
What a fun question. I would have roses and lilacs. I just think that roses are beautiful and lilacs remind me of my Great Grandma.
What gorgeous pictures! It sounds like you had a wonderful time. I loved reading everyone’s choices.
Have a great evening.
I love the sight of tulips blooming in the spring. I consider that a sign that winter is over.
I don’t know about the rest of you, but our winter just dragged on and it is just finally beginning to feel like summer could be around the corner.
I’m a warm weather person…. lol
I would just have daisies in EVERY color they come in. I LOVE daisies.
Spring is a beautiful time of the year with buds on the trees and shoots spurting out of the soil…………i think it’s all about renewal and rebirth.
The colours are amazing,
lots of yellow, buttecups , tulips, daises………………what is it about the colour yellow that makes you smile?
I wish i had a garden,
i would have a blossom tree ( cherry tree i think it’s really callled……………..so in May when a gentle breeze comes along, i would stand under the tree and let all the blossoms rain down upon me………………….it would be like be kissed by wee faeries and and being blessed like magic!).
So to all of you who have a garden this is what i say to you,
enjoy each and every hour you spend there,
watch all your hard work blossom and bloom,
enjoy the aromas,
let your eyes feast upon the colours of the plants, bushes and trees,
happy planting and happy dreams too!
Emma
