Shameless Self-Interest :)

July 2, 2006 by shilohwalker

Okay…here’s the deal. Many of you commented on my blog when we discussed the topic of author websites, what you liked, didn’t like and wish you could find. (And THANK YOU for doing so!) One thing that came across fairly clearly to me was that my website is missing something *a lot* of readers like…the FAQs page. Now, I get asked questions all the time and I do plan to use the page to answer queries that frequently get asked via email and in person, but I’d also like to use it to answer some of the questions that readers hesitate to ask for any number of reasons.

So, here is your chance not only to help me make my FAQs page as reader friendly as possible, but for you to have a say on some of its content.

Post your questions here as a comment. I’ll be away over the weekend, so can’t reply to your comments. But when I get back on Wednesday, I’ll take note of all your questions for my website and draw a name from commentors to win some cool prize…let’s see, what should that be? How about an American Tourister black softside briefcase/carrybag with Secrets Volumes 6, 8 & 9 tucked inside?

Looking forward to your comments!

Hugs,
Lucy

If one of your books was made into a movie, which one would you want it to be and which actors would you choose to play the hero and heroine?

How long did it take to get published?

What did you do to celebrate when you found out your first book was being published?

  2. on July 2, 2006 at 1:53 am Judy F

Is your approach to each type of book you right the same or diff? Exp your series books vs single titles.

How as a book that you had written changed you as a person?

Has a secondary character made his or her presence so strong that you had to give them their own story?

Are you an outline writer or fly by the seat of your pants type?

  3. on July 2, 2006 at 2:10 am Alyssa

    Hmmm, questions.

How do you stay disciplined and on deadline?

Which do you like writing more, single title or series?

Do you have a favorite hero/heroine? If so, who?

I may think of more, but that’s it for now.

    Hi Lucy!

Who or what inspired you to become a writer?

Do you develop a character’s image solely from imagination or do you picture someone you know, a celebrity, etc. to aid character development?

    Hugs, Zara

    Good questions so far!!
    1) Are you the type of person who sees the cup half full or half empty?
    2) What are some of your interests or hobbies?
    3) Do you listen to music while writing or do you do something else; if so, can you share?
    Thanks for your reply.

    Hey Lucy,

Do you make up your characters or do they “talk to you”?

Does your husband have any input in your books, ie. do you talk to him, ask his opinion, have him read any parts of it, or is he strictly hands off?

Do your children read your books and if so how old were they when they started reading them?

How do you know when a book is finished, when it’s time to stop tweaking it and send it off to the publisher?

  7. on July 2, 2006 at 5:30 am Maura

    hmmm

What are your favorite authoring tools – PC, Dana, etc – and why?

What do you find gets your the best feel for your readers and the best reader feedback?

What do you do to maintain your enthusiasm when the rest of your life explodes around you?

  8. on July 2, 2006 at 2:46 pm Billie Jo

    Hi Lucy,

    My questions:

Who was the person who influenced you to write a novel?

Was there anyone special or any one incident that made you decide to dive into writing and give it everything you have?

Was there a special teacher that encouraged you to write?

    Billie Jo

  9. on July 2, 2006 at 3:11 pm KimW

What is the one thing you’ve always wanted to do, but never had the courage to try?

Who is your hero real or fictional? And why?

Which female character of yours is the most like you and why?

  10. on July 2, 2006 at 3:30 pm Cryna

    Here are my questions:

Is there any one of your books that you are most proud of and if so which book and why does it stand out from the rest?

What has been the most rewarding part of being a writer?

What is your favorite aspect of writing? Least favorite?

  11. on July 2, 2006 at 5:53 pm Jennifer Y.

What do you like to read?

What do you do to relax?

Is there a genre or type of book that you would like to write but haven’t?

What are the differences, if any, in the writing process for single titles and categories? Is one easier to write than the other?

  12. on July 2, 2006 at 6:42 pm Bookstoredeb

    Hi Lucy!

Has anything been different than you expected since you became a published author? Such as pressure from deadlines, promo, fan recognition and reactions….

  13. on July 2, 2006 at 7:49 pm Stacy~

You’ve written about several serious conditions that affect women (i.e. vaginismus, endometriosis). What drives you to write about these more serious issues and do you have plans to write about similar topics in the future?

What do you want readers to get out of the books you read? What would you want someone who has never read a romance to understand about these types of stories?

What is the most challenging part of writing for you?

What do you believe is the most effective way of promoting your books?

How do you feel about your daughters reading your books?

  14. on July 2, 2006 at 8:04 pm terri

If someone has never read one of your books which one should they start with?

How much control do you have on your cover art? How important do you think a good cover is?

How long does it take you to write the blurb for the back of your books?

A guest on Oprah is telling the world how wonderful your stories are… who would you want this person to be? Why?

What is your most sentimental possesion?

What is your best tip for a romantic evening with our significant other?

    Most romantic movie line?
    Most romantic book line?

If your characters suddenly came to life which one would…. Hug you for the life you gave them? Slap you for the life you gave them?

What is the strangest thing a reader had ever said to you?

Hope you had a great vacation!

  15. on July 2, 2006 at 10:01 pm Pamk

    Okay here’s my questions
what one thing about yourself could you tell that would surprise your readers?
Name three of your heroes can be male or female.

  16. on July 2, 2006 at 11:12 pm Sheila

    Hi Lucy,
In some of your books you explain about different medical conditions. First I want to thank you for sharing with us the things I never knew about. I think it is awsome how you touch on subjects people don’t know about. And I believe that your books will help women dealing with these conditions. How did you learn about these conditions? And will you write more of them? Sheila

At what age did you knwo you wanted to be a writer?
How did you get your start?
Did you feel the need to take any classes, if so which ones, to start writing?
What is one piece of advice you could give an aspiring author?

  18. on July 3, 2006 at 12:35 pm Dannyfiredragon

    Hi Lucy,

are you a ploter( means do you plan your story ahead) or do you go with the story?

I know that many authors have problems with writing the blurbs, are you one of them?

Do you have a specific time each day when you sit down to write? Or how does your writing look like?

  19. on July 3, 2006 at 5:08 pm Jodi

I know your family is your number 1 priority. How do you balance your family and your writing?

How did you get your start writing?

    Who are your favorite authors?

If you could have any vacation in
    “paradise,” where would you go?

  20. on July 3, 2006 at 10:42 pm Michelle B

I’m so bad with questions! There are so many good ones already asked. These are random and not necessarily very relevant, but oh well!

Is there anything you used to do before you started writing (career or other) that you miss because you don’t have the time/opportunity to do it anymore?

Do you ever see your self “retiring” from writing? (I sure hope not!)

That’s all I can think of for now. If I think of more, I’ll post again.

Hope you have a great, relaxing holiday!

  21. on July 4, 2006 at 3:10 am Lori

    Lucy~

I love books that are part of a continuing series, so my questions are going to be related to that.

Which of your books are connected or part of a series?

When writing stories that are connected, do you just write one story at a time or do the characters from a different story sometimes pull you to their story?

Do you enjoy reading books that are connected?

If so, what is your favorite book that is part of a series (can be one of your own or someone elses.)

    Lori T

  22. on July 4, 2006 at 3:33 pm Joyce

    So many good questions.

As a reader I enjoy the series books. After reading a book with secondary characters, it’s nice to see them in their own story. The reader feels that they all ready know them.

As a writer do you Find it harder or easier to write a series?

  23. on July 4, 2006 at 3:56 pm Cryna

Wow, so many great questions…..here are a couple more I thought of……..

What do you tell other people who want to be writers?

How do you decide where to set your stories?

Are your characters based on real people?

How long does it take you to write a book?

Where do you get your ideas?

  24. on July 5, 2006 at 7:12 pm CrystalG

Do you find it hard to “let go” of characters when a book is finished?
What is the most interesting place you have visited?

  25. on July 6, 2006 at 2:27 pm Jana

You have to evacuate your house, you can take 5 things with you (no limit on size)so what do you take & why?

If your name wasn’t Lucy, what would you want your name to be?

Which of your characters do you most identify with?

Which character was the hardest to write?

  26. on July 6, 2006 at 2:34 pm Patty L

When you first started writing how hard was it for you to stay on task with your normal life still going on, i.e. work, kids, housework.

What is your favorite part of being a published writer.

  27. on July 6, 2006 at 9:46 pm Lucy Monroe

Okay…these questions are GREAT!!! And they gave me a super fun idea. What I’m going to do is to answer at least one per week on my blog and then put a link to the question on my FAQs page. I can’t promise I’ll get to every one, but I’ll try!

And the winner of the softside case with three Secrets anthologies is…Brandy!

Brandy…please email me (lucymonroe@comcast.net) your snail mail address to ship your prize to. ๐Ÿ™‚

    Hugs to all,
    Lucy ๐Ÿ™‚
