Unforgettable Lines & a Contest

July 14, 2006 by shilohwalker

I watched Ghostbusters last night. I haven’t seen that movie in ages and I forgot how funny it was…

I remember how cool the special effects in the movie seemed when it first came out. Now they look sooooooo hmmm.. cheesy? The wonders of digital effects?

Anyway, back to the topic at hand. I love a well written line, whether it’s in a movie or a book, or whatever.

Some memorable lines…

You can’t handle the truth! A Few Good Men

You had me at Hello. Jerry Maguire

(I’m so disturbed that two of my fave lines are from Tom Cruise movies)

Return of the King is one of my fave movies and it’s full of liners I love, but this is my fave.

Gimli: I never thought I’d die fighting side by side with an elf.
Legolas: How about side by side with a friend?
Gimlin: Aye. I could do that.

Tombstone…another good one. I’ll admit, I loved almost every line from Doc Holiday in this one. Kilmer just made that role.

Evidently Mr. Ringo’s an educated man. Now I really hate him.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~

There are soooo many good lines out there. Want to share some of your favorites?

* I got a pressie in the mail today…A big box of copies of Hunting the Hunter. And I wanna share… so everybody that participates in today’s blog is going to be entered into a drawing for a chance to win a signed copy. Just comment, share some of your favorite lines before Monday morning and you’re entered. I’ll draw TWO winners on Monday.

    Hi Shi,

the LOTR quote that you mentioned is my absolute favorite!

  9. on July 14, 2006 at 4:14 pm Patty Lacey

I can never remember lines from movies, I always want to. My younger brother remembers everything, so I just tell him what movie I want a quote from and he can usually tell me what line I am thinking of.

  10. on July 14, 2006 at 4:17 pm Jennifer Y.

Hmm…I have many favorites…Ilove movies almost as much as books:

    From Kindergarten Cop:
    “It’s not a tum-ahh.”

    From Shakespeare in Love:
Shakespeare: I have a new play.
    Marlowe: What’s it called?
Shakespeare: Romeo and Ethel the Pirate’s Daughter.
    Marlowe: What is the story?
Shakespeare: Well, there’s this pirate… In truth I have not written a word.

    From AIRPLANE!:
Striker: Surely you can’t be serious.
Rumack: I am serious…and don’t call me Shirley.

    From Last of the Mohicans:
Duncan: “There is a war going on. How is it you are heading west?”
Hawkeye: “Well, we face to the north and, real subtle-like, turn left.”

From The Princess Bride (many good ones in this movie):
“Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.”

From JAWS (it has been stuck in my head mostly because it is at the end of the show House):
    That’s some bad hat, Harry.

  11. on July 14, 2006 at 4:20 pm Janice Maynard

“My name in Inigo Montoya – You killed my father… Prepare to die!”
    (Princess Bride)

“Stay close to the candles, the staircase is treacherous.”
(Young Frankenstein)… and the candles were not lit… 🙂

I rarely watch TV or movies as I prefer to read but one quote that is a favourite is from ‘The Last Starfighter’
Alex Rogan: So… how many Starfighters are left?
    Grig: Including you? One.

  16. on July 14, 2006 at 6:21 pm Maureen

My husband and I always say this, especially to our kids:

“You’re out of order! You’re all out of order!” Al Pacino from And Justice for All

  17. on July 14, 2006 at 7:07 pm Tempest Knight

OMG! I just bought Ghostbusters on DVD at Wal-mart the other day. As I sat to watch it, I kept thinking what our new technology would go with that crazy ghost Slimmer.

    A few good liners:

“Frankly my dear, I don’t give a damn.” – Gone with the Wind

    LOTR: Fellowship of the Ring

Frodo: “I wish the ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened.”

Gandalf: “So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us.”

“Life is like box full of chocolates.” – Forrest Gump

“May the force be with you, always.” – Star Wars: A New Hope

McCoy: “He’s really not dead . . . as long as we remember him.”

Kirk: “It’s a far, far better thing I do than I have ever done before. It’s a far better resting place that I go to than I have ever known.”
    – Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan

    My all time favorite —

“Luke, I am your father.” Empire Strikes Back

“You were the chosen one!” Revenge of the Sith

“Skeptical? I’ve been called a lot of things, skeptical however, is not one of them.” X-Files

“Beam me up Scotty, there is no intelligent life down here” (duh!)

    Lois

    I’ll be back.

  20. on July 14, 2006 at 8:05 pm Lori

One of my all time favorite was

“Nobody puts Baby in the corner” from Dirty Dancing. Yeah, I know cheesy, but I loved it.

I absolutely loved Napolean Dynomite and there were so many lines that just made me laugh out loud, this was one of them.

Napolean Dynomite: can you bring my chapstick
    Kip: no
Napolean: but my lips hurt real bad!
Kip: ask the nurse I know she has like 5 sticks
Napolean: I’m not using her’s you sicko!!!!!

Those a just a couple…I seemed to draw a blank.
    Lori

Say Anything with John Cusack and Ione Skye is one of my favorite movies. A couple memorable quotes from that film:

Lloyd Dobler: I don’t want to sell anything, buy anything, or process anything as a career. I don’t want to sell anything bought or processed, or buy anything sold or processed, or process anything sold, bought, or processed, or repair anything sold, bought, or processed. You know, as a career, I don’t want to do that.

Lloyd Dobler: I got a question. If you guys know so much about women, how come you’re here at like the Gas ‘n’ Sip on a Saturday night completely alone drinking beers with no women anywhere?

    Joe: By choice, man.

    Diana

  22. on July 14, 2006 at 9:30 pm Judy F

I’m the ghost with the most babe–Beetlejuice.

    Also from Beetlejuice…Attention Kmart shoppers…

I feel the need the need for speed…Top gun

    Those are some knockers–Young Frankenstein

  23. on July 14, 2006 at 10:02 pm Michelle B

Wow, great topic! I tend to forget some great lines in movies/TV shows that I like as I rarely write them down as I’m watching. And some of the lines I do remember are more funny than profound. I can say many of the lines along with the actors in Rush Hour 1 & 2 as well as in many Golden Girls episodes. Some of my faves I’d say are:

    From Golden Girls (Sophia):
“I never understood why blessings wore disguises; if I was a blessing, I’d go around naked!”

    From A Different World:
“Youth is the power to make choices.”

    From The Princess Diaries:
“The brave do not live forever, but the cautious do not live at all.”

    From Six Degrees of Separation:
“How do we keep what happens to us; how do we fit it into life without turning it into an anecdote with no teeth and a punchline you’ll mount over and over, years to come.”

From Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl:
    Will: “You cheated!”
    Jack: “Pirate!”

Pardon if any of the wording isn’t exact.

  24. on July 15, 2006 at 12:56 am Pam G

Rhett Butler in Gone With the Wind, “Frankly my dear, I don’t give a damn”

The house servant in Gone With the Wind, “Ms Scarlett, I don’t know nothin’ ’bout birthin’ no babies!”

That’s all I can think of right now.

Oooh…that is a good one Shi!

I just remembered some from Casablanca (which I saw again not too long ago):
