Jaci Burton’s Surviving Demon Island

December 28, 2006 by shilohwalker

She’s all curves and combat boots.
He’s six feet of lean, dangerous male.
Join them in a game of survival
That’s as real—and hot—as it gets.
What’s America’s top female action star doing on a tropical island shrouded in secrecy? To Gina Bliss, competing in a survival-type reality show is a nice change from fending off on-screen villains. Until she meets real-life action hero Derek Marks. A survival specialist in a tight black T and sexy stubble, he’s arousing every bad-boy fantasy she’s ever had…and testing her survival skills to the max.
Martial arts, jungle warfare—Derek’s done it all. But his latest mission is more dangerous than a stick of dynamite. Try telling that to the sexy, adrenaline-pumped actress who’s got his libido racing off the charts. As the heat rises between them and real-life violence erupts, suddenly Derek and Gina are on the run…and when they uncover a secret so explosive it could blow the lid of their so-called reality show, these two unlikely heroes are about to discover what surviving’s really about….

Did I tell you that I got to read SDI early? :O) It’s excellent.

If you’re wondering what SDI is about, I talked to Jaci about it and here is some of what she told me.

(shi)
Where did the idea for SDI come from?

(jaci)
I actually got the germ of the idea when I was watching an HBO special on the the making of Mr and Mrs Smith. Angelina Jolie did her own stunts in that movie, and thought…hmmm, what if an actress who was very physical, did her own stunts and loved action and adventure was put on an island for a reality show and came up against something paranormal, like demons? Then I matched her up with a demon hunter, and Surviving Demon Island was born.

(shi)
How many books are in the series?

(jaci)
Not sure yet. It depends on how well the series does, but there are a LOT of demon hunters, so it could be a lot of books. *grin*

(shi)
Can you tell us what the next one is about? And naturally… when do I get it…*G*

(jaci)
wellllll, I don’t want to give away too much about the second book or the characters in that book until people have read the first one. But the second book takes place in Australia, one of the demon hunters is a lead character, and you’ll get it when it finishes copyedits, of course *g*

(shi)
You’ve written some books with your husband. How did that come about?

(jaci)
I made him write the first one with me, with encouragement from some of my readers. We really enjoyed it so wrote another one together. Despite the constant nagging and fighting, it’s fun to write with Charlie.

(shi)
What else are you working on right now?

(jaci)
Too many things to count. I’m doing revisions on the second Demon Hunters book, working on a single title Berkley Heat, and a novella for Samhain Publishing. Ack

Thank you, Jaci!

Jaci has generously offered to give away a $10 gift certificate to Amazon, so if anybody has any questions or comments… I’ll draw a winner from those commenting sometime in the next day or so. Jaci will drop in to answer any questions! You can check out her site here

Surviving Demon Island sounds great. It is on my wishlist. If Surviving Demon Island was made into a movie, who would you pick to play the hero and heroine?

  2. on December 29, 2006 at 12:10 am Teresa

I’m looking forward to reading this book, it sounds exciting! Good luck on the launch and keep up the great writing!

Coming out of flu hell to post this question. Which character in SDI would you most like to be and why?

  4. on December 29, 2006 at 1:54 am Cathy

I have been enjoying all the excerpts and just got my copy today. Hoping to carve out some time away from the kidlets, because I have a feeling that once I start it I won’t want to put it down.

  5. on December 29, 2006 at 2:10 am alissa

A fascinating and riveting novel which I look forward to reading and enjoying. Best of luck with your creativity and output.

Your novel has me enthralled. With your talent and versatility which type of writing do you prefer.

  7. on December 29, 2006 at 2:13 am pearl

Enjoyable and exciting. Australia locale sounds great! Best wishes on your future endeavors, many of which you are working on now.

It must be rewarding to see the finished product and then continue on to another project. Being so involved with writing must be very satisfying especially when your work is so successful.

  9. on December 29, 2006 at 2:17 am sharon

Your book has a unique premise and I will enjoy reading this novel. I hope that 2007 gives you even more opportunity for your imagination.

  10. on December 29, 2006 at 2:32 am Jodi

SDI sounds good. I’ll just have to check it out. But, umm, where is this released through?

Surviving Demon Island is definitely on my wish list! I mean, I haven’t even read it and I’m sensing a series that is going to travel past the nine book mark atleast. Its just a great idea for a series. Okay, the questions: Who are some of your favorite books/authors? And what book/author most inspired you to want to write books?

  14. on December 29, 2006 at 10:00 am Dannyfiredragon

    Hi Jaci,

congrats to the Surving Demon Island. I know that it will be another keeper just like your other books!

    Hugs

I noticed this book on your website over the summer and have been waiting patiently (kind of 🙂 ) to read it!!! Congrats on the new release!
    This book looks great!!

  17. on December 29, 2006 at 2:08 pm Jaci Burton

If Surviving Demon Island was made into a movie, who would you pick to play the hero and heroine?

Angelina Jolie for Gina, and Gerard Butler for Derek. *grin*

Which character in SDI would you most like to be and why?

Gina, of course. She’s one kick butt character and gets to do all the fun things I wish I could do. *g*

With your talent and versatility which type of writing do you prefer

Wow, what a lovely compliment! Thank you! I love paranormals because they give me a chance to create a whole new world. It really fires my imagination.

I’ll break up my answers into a few posts.

And hi everyone! Thanks for asking such great questions and thank you for the wonderful comments about my writing and my book! 🙂

  18. on December 29, 2006 at 2:13 pm Jaci Burton

But, umm, where is this released through?

It’s through Bantam Dell and available at bookstores everywhere. You can also order it online at amazon and B&N or any other online bookstore retailer.

Who are some of your favorite books/authors? And what book/author most inspired you to want to write books?

I have lots of favorites. Linda Howard, Nora Roberts, Lora Leigh, Shiloh, of course, Tara Janzen, Karen Marie Moning, JR Ward, Nalini Singh, and I’ve discovered quite a few new authors I love. Elizabeth Lowell inspired me to want to be a writer. She writes the best sensual romances out there.

  19. on December 29, 2006 at 2:40 pm Lara Adrian

This book was so much fun! I don’t need to be entered in the contest because I already read SDI last summer (and bought my own *real* copy this week), but I just had to pop in and say CONGRATS to Jaci on a fabulous book!

  20. on December 29, 2006 at 2:57 pm Jana

I think the premise of this book sounds terrific. Looks like my TBR pile just got a little taller!

  22. on December 29, 2006 at 4:55 pm Jennifer Y.

This sounds like a really good book. Good luck and congrats on the release!

If you could write anything and know it would be a success, what would you write?

  23. on December 29, 2006 at 5:16 pm Jaci Burton

If you could write anything and know it would be a success, what would you write?

Probably the same things I’m writing right now, since I love what I write. I love this Demon Hunter series, have become totally immersed in this world. So here’s hoping I’m successful at it 😉

  24. on December 29, 2006 at 6:16 pm Karen W.

  25. on December 29, 2006 at 6:29 pm Joye

It is always interesting to see which books authors think were good enough to recommend. What were the top 3 books you read this year that you would recommend I read?

  26. on December 29, 2006 at 6:32 pm danetteb

Congrats Jaci on the new release.
SDI is on my TBR list. I was wondering what powers,if any,do your Demons have?

  27. on December 29, 2006 at 7:02 pm Maureen

Congratualtons on the new book which looks great and seems different from other stories out there.

  28. on December 29, 2006 at 7:08 pm Kris

i got it for Christmas, have read it and LOVED it. I cannot wait for the next book. I highly recommend it to anyone that has not read it or has it in their TBR or TBB pile, Move it up in the pile! I love kick-butt heroines and Gina was awesome.
Is the heroine in the next book a hunter as well (if you can answer that without giving too much away)?

  29. on December 29, 2006 at 7:33 pm Joyce

My TBB pile just keeps getting bigger and bigger. Keep up the great writing.

  30. on December 29, 2006 at 7:49 pm Cherie

Surviving Demon Island sounds great! Congrats on the release!

  31. on December 29, 2006 at 8:42 pm Jaci Burton

What were the top 3 books you read this year that you would recommend I read?

I think everyone’s reading tastes differ, so keep that in mind. Of course I’ll tell you that I really enjoy Shiloh’s Hunters series. It’s dark and sexy and emotional and the books always keep me entertained. I love series like that and highly recommend it.

I loved JR Wards Lover Awakened, the 3rd in her Black Dagger Brotherhood series. Start with the first if you haven’t read them yet.

I also loved Nalini Singh’s Slave to Sensation. Fabulous introduction to her new paranormal series.

And I also loved California Demon by Julie Kenner, the 2nd in her Demon Hunter soccer mom series, because it’s such a fun, funny, action oriented series.

That was more than 3, huh? There are also tons more I could recommend…but then I’d take up too much space *g*

  32. on December 29, 2006 at 8:44 pm Jaci Burton

I was wondering what powers, if any, your Demons have?

Oh, that would be giving away secrets. You’ll have to read the book to find out *g*

  33. on December 29, 2006 at 8:47 pm Jaci Burton

Is the heroine in the next book a hunter as well (if you can answer that without giving too much away)?

Kris…thank you so much! I’m thrilled you enjoyed SDI and thank you for the glowing recommendation! Here’s a hint on your question–there’s an excerpt at the back of SDI for Hunting the Demon, the next book in the Demon Hunter series….it’ll tell you who the heroine is. 😉

  34. on December 29, 2006 at 9:42 pm KarenG

I have your book marked on my list. It sounds like a wonderful story.

  35. on December 29, 2006 at 9:57 pm principessa

Surviving Demon Island has me totally interested and I love the characters greatly. The book will be so successful. Best of luck. Happy new Year.

it sounds great have a nice new year

  41. on December 30, 2006 at 2:33 pm Jaci Burton

Just wondering how did the name come about?

It was just one of those things where the title just came to me when I was plotting the book. I wish they were all that easy *g*

  42. on December 30, 2006 at 2:35 pm Jaci Burton

My question: Of your books, do you have a favorite or special one?

Surviving Demon Island is special to me and probably my favorite book so far, because I worked the hardest on it, spent the most time on it and it’s a series I just love. It’s part of me now and means a lot to me.

  43. on December 30, 2006 at 3:18 pm TJBrown

I am so excited to read it… it’s the next on my list!

Been looking forward to reading this one since I first heard about it. Do you have any rituals when you write?

  45. on December 31, 2006 at 7:54 am Maura

I’m still longing to get my hands on this – ever since several other authers taunted about it!

  46. on December 31, 2006 at 3:31 pm Jaci Burton

Do you have any rituals when you write?

I always have to have something to drink, either coffee, Diet Dr Pepper or Diet 7 up. And bubble gum. I’m addicted to bubble gum *g*

Other than that, no rituals 😉
