Romance: Why, What & How

September 22, 2007 by shilohwalker

More specifically…

What kind of romance do you read?

Why do you read it?

How did you get started on it?

Now… if I can be really nosy…

What do you do for a living? How old are you?

How do you react to people when they comment about your reading choices?

Do you hide them and why?

For those wondering~ my answers are below.

What kind of romance do you read?

Pretty much everything except historicals & westerns.  On the rare moments I want a historical, it is usually because I want to re-read an old fave.  Westerns, like even less, although I don’t really know why.

Why do you read it?

I like a happy ever after.  I like reading about two people falling in love.  I love that journey.

How did you get started on it?

A long road trip to Florida with a grandma and an aunt and a cousin.  Only books they had were romances… and so romances were what I read.  Bad them~introducing me to Rosemary Rogers at age… 12?  I think.

What do you do for a living? How old are you?

Currently, a writer.  I’m also a nurse, a mother, a wife.  Very little irritates me as much as the knock against ‘bored’ housewives reading romance for kicks’ .  Obviously whoever says this has never BEEN a housewife.  It’s not as easy as they think.

I’m 31.

How do you react to people when they comment about your reading choices?

Don’t knock it until you try it.  If they persist, I ignore them.

Do you hide them and why?

Nope.  Why should I?

Okay… fess up!

What kind of romance do you read? I read all kinds I don’t read Historical and Westerns like I used to. I did go through a Western phase years ago. The same with Historicals.

Why do you read it? I’ve never really asked myself why I read. I just like to see people get their HEA. I enjoy reading about other peoples lives I guess. 🙂

How did you get started on it? I used to hate to read and my aunt gave one of my sisters and I a bunch of books. There were a few duplicates so my sister would read out load to me. After that I just started to read and I LOVED it.

What do you do for a living? How old are you? I am a 32 year old Administrative Assistant for a Fabrication business.

How do you react to people when they comment about your reading choices? It depends on what I’m reading at the time. If it is a hot scene I might blush a little. I don’t really tell them what I’m reading. I will just show them the cover of my book and they can come to their own conclusion.

Do you hide them and why? I used to hide them when I was younger, but now I really don’t care. 🙂

What kind of romance do you read? Mostly paranormal, but I’ve read a few historical.

Why do you read it? Pure entertainment. I also like a HEA.

How did you get started on it? I’ve always loved to read, it was bound to happen.

What do you do for a living? How old are you? I’m a college student and I’m 19.

How do you react to people when they comment about your reading choices? Depends, if it’s negative, I’ll probably get snarky, if not, we can spend hours talking about different books.

Do you hide them and why? Why would I? I’ll admit I might feel a bit weird whenever I’m in a bookstore romance section but that still won’t stop me from reading them.

What kind of romance do you read? Mostly contempos, historical, just this year started reading paranormals.

Why do you read it? I love the hea, just getting lost in the story.

How did you get started on it? I’ve always read, even as a little kid.

What do you do for a living? How old are you? I’m a secretary & 34.

How do you react to people when they comment about your reading choices? Pretty much tell them to shut up. Most people I know don’t say anything except about how much money I spend on books!

Do you hide them and why? Uh, no. Unless it has a racy cover. My kid is only 10, don’t want to go there yet.

What kind of romance do you read?

All sorts, i’ve read historicals time travel paranormal contemporary, futuristic, scifi…urban fantasy. if theres a sub genre, chances are ive read it.

    Why do you read it?

I love reading, simple as. I’ve had a book in my hand since i was old enough to understand what i was reading and thats all there is too it. it helps that i enjoy the story, the journey of romance too though.

How did you get started on it?

hmm…blame my mum, she handed me “skypirate” by (damn i cant remember who) when i was nearly 11 or so and i havent stoped since.
    Now… if I can be really nosy…

What do you do for a living? How old are you?

I moved into uni today! (about 5 hours ago) so i’m a student and i’m 18, hoping to be a (published) writer someday soon.

How do you react to people when they comment about your reading choices?

…i dont think anyone has… i beleive my english teacher in year 8 saw me reading a romance (he let me just read through all of his english lessons) and warned me not to believe them as life isnt like that. well i proved him wrong as i’m engaged to my hero lol. (also it’s a wonder how i managed to not only pass english but now be doing it at uni too when all i did for one year of school was read books)

Do you hide them and why?

i only hide the cover of whatever book i’m reading if i happen to be in public as i hate it when people try and see what you’re reading. reading (and indeed writing) romance is nothing to be ashamed of.

What kind of romance do you read? I read just about about any romance book there is out there, Historical, western, contemporary, paranormal, sci-fi, time-travel and I have just gotten into reading some of the exoctic books from some of these great authors I have met on some of my yahoo groups I have joined.

Why do you read it? I read because I enjoy reading about other people lives and hoping for happy ending. Heroes and heroines fighting for each other.

How did you get started on it? I got started on reading when I was in the 7th grade. I remember reading The Call on the Canyon by Zane Grey.

    Now… if I can be really nosy…

What do you do for a living? How old are you? I work in the traffice office at a Walmart DC and just turned 57.

How do you react to people when they comment about your reading choices? I show them the book and tell them I read just about any thing but love romance the best. My manager and I talk about the books we read and say have you read this one or that one. I got her hooked on J R Ward’s The Brotherhood books and we both are waiting for the one that comes out on Sept. 25. Lover Unbound which is Vishous”s story.

Do you hide them and why? No I do not hide my books, they are all over the house and I read when I go to the doctors office when I have an appointment. Heck, I read on my breaks and lunch time instead of eating.

What kind of romance do you read? I read them all, though rarely a historical.

Why do you read it? For the HEA and because they are so well written.

How did you get started on it? My grandfather was an avid reader and urged all of his grandkids to read by giving us books as gifts. I remember him giving me one book in particular, it was more of an anthology and all of the stories had HEA’s. I was hooked on romances ever since!

What do you do for a living? How old are you? I’ve been fully disabled since I was almost 17. I’m the old lady here at 46! L0L

How do you react to people when they comment about your reading choices? I basically tell them not to knock it until they have tried at least two.

Do you hide them and why? No way!! Bite your tongue for even asking that. 😉

What kind of romance do you read? Pretty much everything that is out there.

Why do you read it? Because it lets me escape from the real world.

What do you do for a living? am retired. I worked in the reatail trade.

    How old are you? 64

How do you react to people wh commentabout your reading choices? I tell them to each his/her own.

Do you hide them? No way!

What kind of romance do you read?
Mostly contemporary, romance suspense and now paranormal. When I started reading romance I started with historical romance (regencies) but have moved away from them.

My very first romance was back when I was visiting my friend and we spent much of the time reading Harlequins. I returned to reading romances soon I married and wasn’t studying.

    Now… if I can be really nosy…

I love chatting about what I read! These are great questions!

What kind of romance do you read? ***All genres! I love paranormals, historicals, fantasy, contemps, and really I read all romance but horror. I really don’t read much outside romance at all.

Why do you read it?***for Paranormals and fantasy romance, I love reading the uniqueness of what the author’s come up with, the thrill of not knowing what I will be reading. For Historicals, I love to escape from now and go back to read the beauty of the society, clothing, rules and all that of historicals. Mostly regency and medievals. I know you don’t care of historicals, but I never read them until a few years ago and they’ve become a comfort read for me. I too love the contemps! I just love stories like friends to lovers, bodyguards, military (SEALs, etc), bounty hunters, just the beauty of the stories I’m going to read!

How did you get started on it?*** I actually picked up my mom’s Harlequin books, and we started a routine where each evening, I’d go visit her in her room and she’d talk to me about a book she read and others. I’d pick one out and the next night I would come back and pick another. I loved these times with my mom.

What do you do for a living? How old are you?***Due to my health right now, I’m not working, but I work as a social worker/counselor with deaf children and their familes. I’m 46.

How do you react to people when they comment about your reading choices?***I used to shy away from that outside my home at first, keeping to myself. But I’d then read best sellers on those shelves and see the sexuality in that (not necessarily romance), violence and all and I thought I was reading a much better book! So when someone comments to me, I say a positive thing first, and that I have romance in my life and love reading stories that have happy endings. And I might too say that I prefer to stay away from reading violence and all that in books that are all out over the place. And I tell them its a personal choice and respect mine. I’ve really only had to do that at work. I keep recommending romances!

Do you hide them and why?***I really don’t use book covers unless I’m at work (cuz of the kids) or if it has a more explicit cover since I don’t know if i meet kids in the community while I’m reading. But otherwise when I read my romance at home, I never covered the cover. My 21 year old daughter is now reading more and more romances and recommended one to me after she finished it! (I didn’t get into reading romance again til a few years ago. I read alot as a teen, but then when I married, I wasn’t volunteering in thelibrary, so I lost track of what to read and mostly picked up books around from others giving them to me and they were rarely romances).

What kind of romance do you read?
All kinds- I’m not partial to any particular sub-gendre, I love discovering new authors

    Why do you read it?
I’ve read books since I was a young girl- started with Nancy Drew, and grew from there

How did you get started on it?
My mom I guess. She had them around the house, and when I had nothing of my own to read I started picking them up…… 😉

    Now… if I can be really nosy…

What do you do for a living? How old are you?
    I’m 48- and a Cert. Pharmacy Tech.

How do you react to people when they comment about your reading choices?
“Don’t knock ’em ’til you’ve tried ’em!”

Do you hide them and why?
When I was younger I did. Perhaps because of some of the awful covers back in the day?! Now- I don’t care! Especially if it’s a good one- I’ll “pimp” it to my friends. I love to “spread the love” 🙂

What kind of romance do you read? I prefer Contemps, but will read just about anything.

Why do you read it? It’s an escape and I love the HEA

How did you get started on it? I got bored one day (before kids!) and happened upon the eHarlequin website. I found their free online reads and discovered Lori Foster.

    Now… if I can be really nosy…

What do you do for a living? How old are you? I’m 33 (for another week) and am an Administrative Assitant for a Real Estate office and a Fuel Hauling company. I recently applied for my real estate sales license too.

How do you react to people when they comment about your reading choices? I tell them “Don’t knock it until you try it” and then I ignore them.

Do you hide them and why? I don’t hide them, but most people think I do since I put book covers on my book. I only do that to protect my books though.

What kind of romance do you read?

Any and all romances. As long as it has a HEA and the book grabs me, I’ll read it. 🙂

    Why do you read it?

I want that HEA because there is just so much ugliness on the news all the time that my books are my escape.

How did you get started on it?

I’ve always been a reader but it wasn’t until I was 17 years old and had my oldest daughter that I started reading romance novels. She was 2 months old and always napping and there’s only so much soap operas and talk shows you can watch before they start repeating themselves.

What do you do for a living? How old are you?

I’m a SAHM to 4 girls and hubby’s Go-For Gal when he needs someone to run errands for him. I’m 33.

How do you react to people when they comment about your reading choices?

I usually make a comment that they should read some before making comments about it but to be honest, I don’t really care what they think. I read for my enjoyment, not anyone else’s.

Do you hide them and why?

Nope. Well, to be honest, not now. *G* Before, when we lived in a small apartment, yes, I tried to keep them all in one place. Now, in our new house, you’ll find books in every room you walk into but the majority is in my office on the bookshelves my daughters’ bought for me or still in bins in the attic that need to be unpacked.

    Now… if I can be really nosy…

What do you do for a living?teacher How old are you?41

How do you react to people when they comment about your reading choices?I don’t know how to type the sound they make….kind of a cross between pfft and shpt
