Hunter's Need

I’ve posted the first chapter in its entirety at Scribd. You can read it here.

On Wednesday, 12/2, there’s a launch party @ bitten by books and you can enter to win book $$$.

Here’s one last, little excerpt from Hunter’s Need, and I’ve gotta admit…it’s one of my favorite scenes.

“I gave you your answer, Ana. Can’t you answer mine?”

I love you. She wanted to tell him, wanted to throw her arms around his neck and tell him, over and over. But she held back. This wasn’t right. Wasn’t good, not for him. Even back when she let herself daydream about having Duke in her life, she’d known it wasn’t right. Duke deserved better than her. He deserved so much more.

“This isn’t good for you.” She blurted the words out before she lost her nerve. Pulling away from him, she jerked her shirt back up but her hands shook too much to button it. Instead, she just held it closed between her breasts. “This is bad for you. I’m bad for you. You’ve got to know that. Even if you…even if you think you feel how you’re saying, you have to know I’m bad for you. I’m not the kind of woman you need in your life, Duke. I’m not strong enough. You need somebody strong. Somebody more like you—”

Duke reached out and hooked his hand in the front of her jeans, gently. She resisted. He jerked harder and she crashed into his chest with a startled, “Ooommph.”

“I know what I need,” he growled. When she would have argued, he covered her lips with his finger. “I know what I want, what I need. And it’s you, Ana. If I wanted somebody like me, I would have gone chasing after Kendall or half a dozen other women that I’ve met. I didn’t go after them, because I was too hung up on you and I have been, from the first damn time I laid eyes on you. I love you. I want you. I need you.”

He cut her words off with a hard, short kiss. “Don’t want to hear it,” he snarled. “I love you. You don’t get the right to tell me what I need, or what I deserve. That’s my call, princess. Now give me an answer—do you love me?”

If you’ve enjoyed the snippets, I hope you’ll pick it up…either at your local indie store, local bookstore… wherever. :o)

Countdown to Hunter’s Need…

Hunter’s Need releases in just over a month.  I’m doing a big contest over @  my personal blog.  If you’d like to read up on it, just visit http://shilohwalker.wordpress.com

A mini excerpt from the countdown…

He still had scars from those days, days that ran together in a pain-filled, delirious blur.  Just a few days, but even a few minutes under those circumstances would be too much.  She’d used him, figured out what and who he was and toyed with him, making him believe she wanted him and convincing him to leave the club with her.

He’d done just that, but instead of taking her to a motel or some dark, quiet apartment where she lived, she’d taken him to hell.  To Cat, a feral vampire with a few mental issues.  Something about Ana’s gift fucked with his instincts and he’d been blinded to the fact that the house he was following her into the territory of a feral vamp’s.  Ferals—the kind of creature that Duke hunted down and killed.

Blind to everything but Ana, he’d been so caught up in her, in the taste of her mouth, the feel of her body against his, he hadn’t realized the danger until it was too late.  He’d been shot with silver and in the brief period he’d been unconscious, somebody had chained him up, bound him head to toe with chains of silver and titanium—the silver drained him, burned him and ate into his flesh, while the titanium was too fucking strong for him to break away.

And that was how he’d spent the next couple of days, up until help arrived, in the form of Mary Kendall and Duke’s old friend Kane.  Somebody from his life before.  Life before the Hunters.  Life before he’d ever met up with a sad-eyed psychic—a life that had been a helluva a lot easier.

He didn’t remember much of the days he spent in captivity, beyond Ana.  Almost every damn time he swam up out of the black well of pain and weakness brought on by starvation, she’d been there, urging water past his parched throat, giving him just enough to keep him going.  A natural shifter, he ate more, drank more than a mortal.  A mortal could go a decent amount of time before starvation left them weak.  But for a shifter, a couple of days without food was enough to put him in a bad state.

For the thousandth—no, probably the millionth time, he found himself wondering why she’d made the pretense of helping him, of caring if he lived or died under Cat’s hand.  Found himself wondering why she was here—why she’d come, and why they’d allowed her to stay.

Be lazy with today’s post…

I’ve been lazy here for a while… sorry, guys!  Too much going on, too many things to do, and I’m an airhead.

So I’ll just share some links.

I’ve got a contest going on at my blog… a book giveaway for SJ Day’s latest.

I guest-blogged at literary escapism and there’s a contest.

I did some rewriting and revising and expanding on an old ebok of mine, Redemption-it was released from Triskelion.  It’s been out of circulation for a while and it’s been released from Samhain this July, and it’s a much cleaner read, has a beautiful cover.  You can read an excerpt here. Although it looks like I already mentioned it here…hmmm… oh well.

I’ve got an author page up on facebook-I’ll mostly just use this for updates and stuff, but there will be the occasional contest, so if you’re on facebook, you join the page here.

And here in the next few days, I’ll think I’ll be finishing up my next story for Samhain, a paranormal called Candy Houses.

The Redeeming…coming in July

A few months ago, I sent one of my out-of-print ebook titles to my editor at Samhain.  She wanted it so I did some revising and rewriting.  Also had to give it a new title.  It was called Redemption, but now it’s titled The Redeeming.  It’s going to be out in July and I wanted to share an excerpt.

“You want her to face her mother.” Jonah turned away, hoping to hide the fiery rage that built within, the need to howl. Not right…what they demanded wasn’t right. “Can’t you see how terrified she is?”

Jonah certainly could. Now he understood the fear he’d seen in her eyes.

Sansan sighed. “Indeed, we see it. But having a soul means you’re willing to sacrifice all for another. If she didn’t fear her mother, there would be no sacrifice.”

As Jonah turned, glaring, he found himself alone, in an empty room. Whirling, he grabbed a stained coffee cup from the desk and hurled it at the wall. “Damn it!” he shouted.

And then he collapsed onto the ground, looping his arms around his knees and bowing his head. “Damn it,” he whispered.

He was still trying to recover his ground when the knock came, a long time later. Wearily, he trudged to the door, opening it with dread. He knew who was on the other side.

A woman he had dreamed of.

A woman he hungered for.

A woman he barely knew.

A woman who had been born of a demon.

Staring into her eyes, Jonah thought, almost wildly, I don’t care…

Whatever she had been getting ready to say died as he reached out, pulling her against him. Lowering his head, he covered the rosebud mouth with his, groaning as the clean, pure taste of her flooded his senses. This is not a creature of evil…

He knew evil. She wasn’t it.

She was spring rain, summer warmth and the light of the sun in his arms. A startled squeak escaped her as he kissed her, surprise and hunger lighting those dark blue eyes.

As her hands slid up his chest, Jonah spun her around, pulling her inside the house and kicking the door closed. Backing her up against the wall, he groaned as he felt the bite of her nails at his neck. Her entire body was quivering, vibrating against his. A hungry little purr escaped her lips as he pressed hungry, biting kisses down her neck, to her collarbone as he slid the jacket from her shoulders.

“Jonah,” she gasped out as he jerked her shirt from the waist of her jeans, his hands seeking out the cool, silken feel of her skin.

He wanted to howl as she started to whimper in his arms, rocking against him, an almost feverish hunger in her midnight-blue eyes. “Lily,” he rumbled as he dipped his head and buried his face in the soft, sweet valley between her breasts.

An insidious little whisper of doubt started to creep in as he shoved up her shirt baring the full, silk-covered curves of her breasts. The dusky circles of her nipples were a shadow under the fragile silk. Urging her closer, he took the peak of one nipple in his mouth, drawing deep, shuddering at the hot, female taste of her skin.

As he feasted on the heated satin of her skin, a voice of doubt whispered in his mind. Do you really think this is helping your situation, Adamm?

Savagely, he shoved the voice out of his head. It felt…foreign. But not Sansan. Sansan hadn’t called him Adamm since they had shoved him into this body.

Wonderful way to save your soul, fornicating like the bastard you’ve always been…

He shot to his feet, lacing his fingers through her hair as he pressed his mouth back to hers, waiting for the heaven of her mouth, and the blood pounding in his head, to drown out that nasty little whisper.

He’s given one chance at redemption—hers and his.

Hired killer, Vixen Markham doesn’t have any illusions about life or love. Unable to trust even the one man she lets into her heart, she makes a decision that she’ll regret for the rest of her life—which won’t be much longer by the looks of things. Loaded with vengeance and a small arsenal of weapons, she’s ready to face up to her past and say goodbye to her future, until she’s confronted by a pair of eyes she could never forget.

Graeme Mackenzie Lawson lived a hard life. Hard on himself and harder on those who got in his way. Betrayed and murdered, he’s given one chance at redemption—but not for himself—for the woman he loved, the woman who killed him.
